Master P Rebuilds Calliope Projects In New Orleans With HUD

with one comment

When I first met Master P in 1992, he had just relocated from the Calliope Projects about a year or so and was going to Lake Merritt College playing basketball and going to school. Whenever we would meet over at Underwood Works and Phunky Phat GraphX, he would always tell me about the Calliope, New Orleans, and that he wanted to one day fix the economic conditions there and eradicate poverty which he felt led to a life of crime for many Calliope residents.

He is now fulfilling that life mission and is teaming up with The Housing and Urban Development Government agency to rebuild The Calliope. Working with HUD Secretary Shaun Donovan, Percy Miller says

I’m honored to be a part of the ground breaking alongside President Obama’s right hand man, Secretary Shaun Donovan who shares the same goals as me, which is to help B.W. Cooper residents get back into their new homes

The former Calliope Projects or B.W. Cooper named after long time resident who died in Katrina are being renamed to The Marerro Commons and are on target to be completely rebuilt by the end of 2010. During Donovan’s fourth trip to New Orleans, he relayed encouraging news for families still trying to rebuild.

We worked closely with the state and the city to get services to them, so we could help them with whatever challenges were keeping them from getting into a permanent home and as you heard today we made a number of changes to speed assistance to help rebuild homes

said Donovan.

I am personally very proud of Percy Miller’s continuous efforts to help people change their lives.
